![]() ![]() Sand is denser than water, meaning that it will sink to the bottom of a container of water. Once finished, dump out any waste collected in your bucket and dispose accordingly. Place your finger over the end that goes into the aquarium so no water escapes and slowly move it along your tank’s surface, suctioning up all dirt and debris as you go. Start with an empty bucket and place the end of the gravel vacuum into the sand bed until it reaches bottom. If you have sand dust in your aquarium, one of the best ways to get rid of it is by using a gravel vacuum or siphon. As a result, the relatively-heavier particles of sand sink to the bottom while the lighter molecules of oil remain on top. This is because oil has a much lower specific gravity than that of the sand particles, meaning it is lighter and less dense. Why is My Axolotl Floating? Reasons + What to Do Additionally, adding dechlorinator or alkalinity buffer will help maintain ideal water conditions and reduce the risk of clumping and floating. ![]() To prevent this from happening, it’s important to ensure that your aquarium has proper filtration and circulation as well as a healthy population of beneficial bacteria in order to keep the pH level stable. Aquarium Sand Clumping And FloatingĪquarium sand is prone to clumping and floating, which can be a common occurrence if the water chemistry isn’t properly balanced. Additionally, adding plants and rocks to your tank can help keep the particles down as well as provide an aesthetically pleasing environment for your fish.įinally, performing regular water changes and vacuuming out any excess debris whenever necessary can also help reduce the amount of floating sand in your aquarium. This involves placing a filter at the bottom or top of the tank that will collect and remove any floating particles, including sand. One way to get rid of floating sand in an aquarium is by using mechanical filtration. How to Get Rid of Floating Sand in Aquarium This phenomenon only occurs with small particles as larger ones tend to be too heavy for air bubbles to lift. However, some grains of sand may stay afloat thanks to air bubbles that attach themselves to the surface and decrease its density. The majority of sand, when placed in water, will settle at the bottom due to its heavier weight. Sand Floating in Water But Most of the Sand is Settled at the Bottom You may also want to add water-stabilizing chemicals to help keep the pH level balanced if necessary. To fix this problem, reduce the output of your filter system to create less agitation and allow for more oxygen exchange with the substrate. Floating sand can be caused by too much movement or agitation from the filter system and other aquarium inhabitants, resulting in air pockets being created between the grains of sand. If you’ve noticed your aquarium sand is floating, don’t worry – it’s a common issue in fish tanks. Finally, it’s possible that you haven’t washed your sand properly before adding it into your tank this will cause dirt particles and organic matter present within the sand grains making them rise above the surface when mixed with water. Thirdly, if you’ve recently added dechlorinator or other chemicals into your tank they may have caused some gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen to form underneath your substrate. ![]() Secondly, if you are using tap water to fill up the aquarium, there could be high levels of chlorine in the water which causes particles in the sand to become buoyant and float on top of the water surface. Firstly, it may be due to an air pump that is too strong for the size of your tank or a filter with too much flow rate. And by May 2018, my one-person indie company was essentially bankrupt. I won't bore you with the gory details - because they're both personal and quite boring - but in late 2017 the business came crashing down. But with the birth of my son (and then daughter), my wife left her job to raise them while they were babies and I went back to a 9 to 5 job plus my software business. You'll see that I've had to rely on revenue from existing customers as the number of new users buying my app has fallen.įrom 2012 through 2014 it was my only job. Here's a chart of total new customers gained each month from 2007 through last month. And even with those discounts, my upgrade revenue typically dwarfed my income from new customers more and more with each passing year. Over the course of twelve years I released seven paid upgrades - each time offering existing customers a discount of 15 to 50% off. At that point you could upgrade at a discounted price or stick with your current version as long as it kept working for you. Your one-time payment got you all minor updates until the next major release. VHX followed the typical up-front pricing model. Originally costing $7 for version 1.0, over the next six years it would mature and gain new features until finally settling at $49 in 2013 a price that lasted until November 2019. Other small projects like that followed, but my first, real commercial endeavor (at least as I view it) was VirtualHostX in 2007. It certainly didn't make me rich, but I was able to buy the occasional sandwich on the way to my college job at RadioShack. Nonetheless, LGB fantasy fans will be glad to find this book on their library’s shelves.MroctoberWell, 2011 was a so-so year. Libraries that don’t yet offer many queer fairy tales may be better off purchasing Malinda Lo’s Ash or Berman’s 2009 anthology So Fey. Some of the stories are executed more successfully than others, and there are a few typos and old-fashioned terms that would have been addressed in a more rigorous editing process. Overall, Red Caps is an enjoyable addition to the queer fantasy genre. Some of the other illustrations, however, felt overly cartoonish or distracting. Ilike Merey, known for the graphic novel a+e 4ever, contributed quirky, charming art that complements the text particularly well. The tales in this collection are accompanied by several artists’ illustrations. The collection’s strongest story, “Only Lost Boys Are Found,” falls into this category: a high-school freshman protagonist tries to find his missing boyfriend after a traumatic coming-out process and has to confront a pirate and ninja en route. Berman’s world-building is serviceable, but I was more satisfied with his less speculative pieces, the ones that present a high school slice-of-life drama that takes occasional field trips into the fantastic. One is set completely in a fantasy world, while another contains no speculative elements at all. Love, adventure, and nasty breakups abound in these stories, most of which center on young queer men, although two stories feature queer women as protagonists.Įach narrative presents an exceptional blend of the real and the fantastic. Characters receive advice from mythical beings, wander into fantasy worlds, and argue over whether labels constrain or empower those who claim them. The stories–based on fairy tales, local legends, and even a Buffy episode–range from sweet to downright creepy. Like Diana Athill (whose Alive, Alive Oh! this resembles), I think of Morris as a national treasure, and I was pleased to spend some time seeing things from her perspective. In the end, though, kindness is Morris’s cardinal virtue, and despite minor illness, telephone scams and a country that looks to be headed to the dogs, she’s encouraged by the small acts of kindness she meets with from friends and strangers alike. It seemed to me a strange issue to get worked up about, especially as enthusiastic meat-eating and killing mice with traps suggest that she’s not applying a compassionate outlook consistently. Even so, I noticed that the plight of zoo animals, clearly a hobby-horse, gets mentioned several times. Each piece is only a page or two, so I tried never to read many more than 10 pages at a time. However, as is often the case with diaries, read too many entries in one go and you may start to find the sequence of (non-)events tedious. There’s a good variety of topics here, ranging from current events to Morris’s love of cats I particularly liked the fragments of doggerel. Hold all that up against her current languid existence among the books and treasures of Trefan Morys and it seems she’s lived enough for many lifetimes. She took her first airplane flight 70 years ago, and is nostalgic for the small-town America she first encountered in the 1950s. Back when she was still James, Morris served in World War II, was the Times journalist reporting from the first ascent of Everest, and wrote a monolithic three-volume history of the British Empire. There are thrilling little moments, though, when a placid domestic life (a different kind of marmalade with breakfast each day of the week!) collides with exotic past experiences, and suddenly we’re plunged into memories of travels in Swaziland and India. Though each day’s headlines seem to herald chaos and despair, she’s a blithe spirit – good-natured about the ravages of old age and taking delight in the routines of daily one-mile walks down the lane and errands in local Welsh towns with her beloved partner Elizabeth, who’s in the early stages of dementia.
